TSEDEQ is a research and development center committed to supporting Christians who are working for economic justice and facilitating Christ-centered transformational development in urban America and developing countries.
Tsedeq is Hebrew for "justice" and "righteousness," recognizing that in God's view the two are inseparable, and that righteousness come from God through Christ.
Throughout Scripture God expresses concern for justice toward the poor and Christians are admonished to act upon it.Every person should have access to the resources necessary for life.Everyone should also have the opportunity to participate as an accepted member of the community, have access to the productive resources for dignified participation in the economy, and the freedom to fulfill God's calling for them.
Economic development entails an expansion of the freedoms that individuals enjoy. This would include the freedom to achieve, to consume, to produce, to live better, to worship, to exercise political expression, to enjoy civil rights, to experience personal safety, and to deal with others under guarantees of disclosure and lucidity.
Transformational development (TD) is a holistic approach to economic progress.TD recognizes poverty as a material, social and spiritual condition where hopelessness reigns in the lives of people.Contrary to current, dualistic domestic and foreign aid programs where spiritual and material concerns are kept separate, TD openly discusses and works with the spiritual issues embedded in the materialistic and social world and life views of the poor while delivering traditional development programs. The poor, created in the image of God (Gen. 1:26) and co-creators on earth (Gen. 1:28) are valued as bearers of God's image in the TD paradigm. As a result, TD maintains Jesus Christ as a focal point in economic development programming (e.g. incarnational witness, Bible studies, evangelism, and church participation).
A minority of Christians have the courage to answer God's call to work for economic justice and to bring the transforming presence of Christ into families, communities and nations.Blessedly, many of them are Eastern University graduates.TSEDEQ is dedicated to supporting those Christians through access to research, prayer, counseling and encouragement.
